For a harlot is a deep pit, and a seductress is a narrow well. She also lives in wait as for a victim, and increases the unfaithful among men

Frank dragged the box marked Ginny Sue West over to his desk and lifted the top. He took a breath and let it out slowly as he picked up the top sealed plastic bag.

The victim’s clothing had been sent to the crime lab in Missoula eleven years ago. He’d sent the new evidence marked as Urgent. His hope was that the new evidence would provide the proof he needed to not only make an arrest but also get a conviction.

The autopsy was attached to his report. He didn’t bother with any of that right now but dug out the small sealed plastic bags with the purse’s contents. The purse had been found in Ginny’s pickup.

Pulling out the one with the partial scrap of notepaper, he flattened the plastic and the torn piece of paper inside. The scrap of paper had been found in Ginny’s purse-sized Bible, the New Living Translation.

Ginny had been a regular churchgoer, so he hadn’t thought much about the piece of torn paper—or the words printed on it. At the time he’d thought she’d simply used it to mark her place.

Now, though, he turned to his computer and typed “bible verse,” and the three words that were readable on the scrap of paper, “like a robber.”

Proverbs 23-28 came up at the top of the page.
